About Us
The Baeyens 3B Ranch is a family run cattle operation located in Arkansas. The ranch is nestled in the Ouachita Mountains situated directly on the banks of the beautiful Ouachita River. I'm Dennis, and running the ranch is now my full-time occupation. I retired from an academic career two years ago after working for 32 years as a molecular biologist at the University of Arkansas. My wife, Marilynn, is the veterinarian for the Little Rock Zoo as well as being in private practice in Sherwood Arkansas. The third member of our team is our daughter Katie. Katie, following in her mother's footsteps, graduated with a degree in veterinary medicine from LSU in 2008. She is currently practicing veterinary medicine with her mother in Sherwood , Arkansas. Running the ranch keeps me very busy but having the medical expertise around sure makes things easier.
Goals of the Baeyens 3B Ranch
Our primary goal is to incorporate superior genetics into our Brahman and Hereford cattle through a selective breeding program. We are concentrating on producing animals that are able to thrive in their environment. We believe that the F1 Braford cattle, resulting from a Hereford-Brahman cross, will greatly enhance our chances of achieving this goal. The F1 cattle have maximum hybrid vigor and nicely bridge the gap between the English breeds that are adapted to a more moderate climate and the subtropical Brahman cattle. In short, they thrive in the South and the Southwest no matter what the season.
A second goal is to encourage our cattle to make maximal use of available forages. To accomplish this goal are we are using management intensive grazing techniques (MIG) to improve pasture and reduce our dependence on supplemental feed. By cutting our pasture smaller paddocks and rotating cattle on a schedule, and using mob grazing techniques, we have vastly reduced our dependence on winter hay feeding. Our ultimate aim is to become hay independent.
We also raise working Border Collies to help us with the cattle. These dogs have proven themselves to be indispensable partners for cattle management. Our dogs are bred solely for their working ability. From time to time we have puppies for sale which will be featured on this website.
